Harepaora was 21 years old when he first put cups on cows and it changed his life forever.
TRAINING INSTITUTE: Diploma in Agribusiness, Level 4
CURRENT EMPLOYMENT: Contract Milker
“I want to be a positive role model for young Maori”
Harepaora says he did not make the most of school and drifted through his late teenage years.
Then, at 21-years-old while attending an industry training course in Bay of Plenty, he got in the dairy shed and put cups on cows.
He was instantly hooked on dairy farming.
Harepaora loves farming because he gets to work outdoors with animals and on the land.
After starting as a Farm Assistant, Harepaora broadened his experience by working on different farms as a Farm Manager then Contract Milker.
Five years after it all began, Harepaora won Ahuwhenua Young Maori Famer of the Year in 2017.
“I now have the necessary attitude and skills to be a positive role model for young Māori.”
Harepaora likes to help young people needing a kick-start in life by teaching them life skills and how to save money. He already employs young relief milkers.
“I want other young people to choose agriculture. They need to think: if that fella can do it then I can do it.”
